SPRINTS – Descartes
Dublin’s SPRINTS have unveiled ‘Descartes’, the lead single from their forthcoming album ‘All That Is Over’. The track emerged from frontperson Karla Chubb’s aeroplane reading of Rachel Cusk’s ‘Outline’, specifically the line ‘Vanity is the curse of our culture’ – a moment that sparked what she describes as instantaneous songwriting.
The band flips Descartes’ famous cogito ergo sum into something more visceral: ‘I speak so therefore I understand.’ This isn’t academic posturing but a survival mechanism, with Chubb explaining that writing is both a creative tool and a processing system for navigating an evermore fractured world.
‘All That Is Over’, due September 26th via City Slang and Sub Pop, arrives quickly after January 2024’s ‘Letter To Self’. Rather than creative fatigue, the band found themselves more prolific than ever, with Chubb writing daily to process personal upheaval alongside global atrocities. The album promises to confront everything from personal breakups to international conflicts, seeking clarity amid societal madness.
The accompanying video, directed by Niamh Bryson, complements a track that transforms philosophical inquiry into a punk anthem; the most profound insights come from the loudest expressions of confusion.
